BRIEF HISTORY AND ROLE
The present Naval Hospital (INHS Kasturi) was started
as a small 4-bedded sick bay with one Medical Officer,
two paramedical staff and one chair Dental Centre to
provide medical cover to service personnel and their
families of the engineers training base INS Shivaji
during British rule in 1944-45.
The bed strength was gradually increased over the
years and the sick bay was converted into the 40-
bedded independent Naval Hospital Lonavla in September
1978. The 54 bedded INHS Kasturi was finally
commissioned as the Indian Navy’s sixth hospital on 02
June 1980.
The name Kasturi was chosen after the Kasturi deer
whose musk is said to have unique medicinal
properties.
In November 2001 the hospital shifted from the old
barrack type accommodation to its present location -
the renovated Godavari block. The modernized building
has been provided with a lift, central air
conditioning and generator back - up for smooth
functioning.
The hospital fulfils the role of providing
comprehensive health care to the dependent population
of the base which comprises of approximately 6500
Naval, DSC, Air force, MES and defence civilian
personnel with their families. The healing touch is
provided by a physician, surgeon, dentist and
part-time obstetrician, while the Station Health
Organization takes care of preventive and promotive
aspects of health care.
Kasturi has kept pace with the ongoing modernization
of Naval hospitals with the addition of new equipment
in the operation theatre, dental centre and labour
room, upgraded diagnostic and resuscitation facilities
and the creation of an ad-hoc ICU to cater to the
needs of the clientale. Today, the endeavour is to
provide the highest level of medical care possible at
a peripheral hospital.
The hospital boasts of a well maintained and
landscaped garden with a variety of seasonal flowers
and an artificial pond with water lilies in keeping
with the beautiful natural surroundings. The garden is
appreciated by patients and visiting dignitaries
alike.
