RELIEF ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY INDIAN NAVY

As of today a total of 22 ships, 12 helicopters and 4 fixed wing aircrafts of the Indian Navy are engaged in the rehabilitation operations. In addition, the naval bases located near the Tsunami hit areas have been rendering immense contribution towards expediting the process of restoring normalcy.  Over 4000 Indian Naval personnel are committed to these operations.  Approximately 730 Tons of relief supplies (like Tents, Gensets, Desalination Plants, Blankets, etc), including 446 Tons of provisions and 15 Tons of medicines have been delivered by the naval ships and aircraft to the affected areas.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Op SEA WAVES)

INS Kumbhir  is providing relief assistance at Hut Bay. Ships' team assisted in floating a pontoon near the cargo jetty.  

 IN Ships Rajput, Darshak, Magar, Sandhyak, Trinkat, Tillanchang and Sharabh are operating off Nancowry group. INS Sharabh disembarked 193 Tons of relief material at Kamorta. INS Rajput disembarked 4 KL of aviation turbine fuel(AFTK) at inner anchorage for Kardip.

INS Brahmaputra, off Campbell Bay, distributed about 500 kg of rice and 270 kg of dal along with first aid medical stores at the Base Camp at Campbell Bay.

IN LCU 34, at Campbell Bay, 114 drums of diesel 20 drums of kerosene handed over to the Administration.

Assistance to Sri Lanka (Op RAINBOW)

Galle

INS Sharda (OPV), with Chetak helecopter embarked, arrived at Galle on 12 Jan 05 and has taken over the coordination of relief activities.

A technical team from the ship assisted the Fisheries department for repairs of fishing boats and wreck clearance. One team from INS Sharda also carried out debris clearance along with the Indian Army team for setting up a Relief Camp at Televatha.

Rehabilitation Work     The Indian Army's composite team (81 personnel) from INS Sarvekshak has been rendering assistance in Galle to restore essential services including assistance towards the construction work of a bridge at Televatha.

Colombo

INS Sutlej (Survey Ship) is deployed at Colombo since 06 Jan 05 for Survey of Colombo harbour.

Trincomalee

INS Jamuna continues to be deployed at Trincomalee for providing medical treatment to affected people and to coordinate relief operations ashore. Seven officers and 51 sailors from INS Jamuna have set up relief camp at Kuchuveli and have carried out debris clearance, repair of portable gensets, OBM engines of fisherman, repair of household and electronic items, cleaning of sea water pump at police barracks. One officer and 21 sailors from INS Ghorpad operating from relief camp at Vellur cleaned two schools, sprayed disinfectants, assisted in setting up heavy furniture and cleaned six wells. Removal of one pump and motor from a school for repair was also undertaken.

One disaster relief group of 65 naval personnel at SL Naval Base is working in coordination with civil and military authorities. The team is equipped with portable equipment and engineering support tools, continues to be deployed at Trincomalee and provided relief assistance to the needy people in the Kuchuveli, Vellur and Nelaveli areas.

Medical Camps                    Medical camps conducted by Naval personnel are operating at the following locations:-

Aircraft Detachment     One Dornier and one Islander aircraft detachment ex- Kochi continues to operate from Colombo. The Islander aircraft ferried six BBC journalist to Ampara in two trips and ferried three SLAF personnel on the return legs.

Relief Assistance to Maldives (Op CASTOR)

ICGS Vigraha and one Dornier aircraft continues to be deployed in Maldives to support relief operations at various islands. The ship with 50 tonnes of relief material ex-Male is heading for relief operations in the Southern Group of Islands.

Indonesia (Op GAMBHIR)

IN Ships Nirupak (Hospital Ship) with Chetak helecopter and Khukri (Corvette) are deployed off Meulaboh (Indonesia) since 05 Jan 05.

Medical Relief         One medical camp continues to operate in the premises provided by the Indonesian Army.The following activities were undertaken on 12 Jan 05:-

  • Medical relief in coordination with the local health authorities.

  • A Blood transfusion unit was established at the Meulaboh General Hospital as requested by the Indonesian Health authorities.

  • Demonstration of Bio waste disposal using lime pits for medical missions as required.

  • Causality evacuation on as required basis.

SUMMARY

The ships, aircraft and personnel of the Indian Navy are working besides other Government Agencies in providing the rehabilitation assistance to the affected people. The Chief of the Naval Staff visited the A & N Islands on 12 Jan 05 and visited the Tsunami affected areas. After the visit, he complimented the all three Services for having 'pulled together' and contributed in providing rescue, relief and rehabilitation to victims of this unprecedented disaster. He further emphasised that this has been a demonstration, not just of joint operations at its best, but also of compassion and solidarity with our fellow citizens. The CNS assured that the Navy will provide the necessary support till the task was completed.
