INTEGRATED HEADQUARTERS OF MINISTRY OF DEFENCE (NAVY)
RELIEF ASSISTANCE PROVIDED BY INDIAN NAVY
24 ships, 16 helicopters and 5 fixed wing aircraft of the Indian Navy are engaged in the relief operations. In addition, the naval bases located near the Tsunami hit areas have been rendering immense contribution towards expediting the process of restoring normalcy. Over 4500 Indian Naval personnel are committed to these operations. Approximately 680 Tons of relief supplies (like Tents, Gensets, Desalination Plants, Blankets, etc), including 300 Tons of provisions and 11 Tons of medicines have been delivered by the naval ships and aircraft to the affected areas.
Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Op SEA WAVES)
Hut Bay Island
IN Ships Magar, Kumbhir, LCU 39, LCU 35, and LCU 36 are providing relief assistance. Preventive medical care has been initiated at Kalinagar and Harmindar Bay.
IN Ships Sandhayak, Jyoti, Darshak, Sharabh and LCU 38 are operating off Nancowry group. Brahmaputra and Trinkat are off Campbell Bay. INS Rajput is operating off Carnicobar. INS Brahmaputra along with the tribal captain had carried out the aerial recce of Pilomilo, Pilobabi, Pilokunji and Kyang.
East Coast (Op MADAD)
Tamil Nadu Coast
Diving Operations The diving operations by the Indian Naval Diving Team to clear obstructions in Chennai port are continuing.
Nagapattinam One Medical Camp continues to operate at Thopputhurai and op logistics to the camp is being provided by Naval Detachments located at Nagapattinam and Thopputhurai.
Kanyakumari The relief and rehabilitation support and medical aid continues to be provided at Kolachel and Kottilpadu villages of Kanyakumari district.
Assistance to Sri Lanka (Op RAINBOW)
Galle
INS Sarvekshak (Survey ship) is alongside the New Jetty at Galle and coordinating the activities of the medical and relief camps ashore. Two separate medical teams have also been deployed in remote areas in addition to the one at Galle.
Rehabilitation The Army composite team (81 personnel) from INS Sarvekshak has been re-deployed at SLNS Dakshin at Galle to undertake relief work and the following tasks were undertaken:-
- Clearance of four wells.
- Construction of hygiene and sanitary facilities in Televatha.
- Assistance in the ground preparation for construction of bridge at Televatha.
- Restoration of power in two government buildings.
- A team of ten personnel from INS Sarvekshak repaired three fishing boat engines on the request of Fisheries department.
Colombo
INS Sutlej (Survey Ship) is deployed at Colombo since 06 Jan 05. The following tasks have been completed by Sutlej at Colombo as on PM 08 Jan 04:-
- 70% sounding (depth measurement) operations.
- 80% coastline.
- 50% survey of the area with side scan sonar.
Medical Camps Medical camps conducted by Naval personnel are operating at the following locations:-
- One Medical Team, which was airlifted from Kochi on 26 Dec 04, continues to be employed with Sri Lankan Army Military Engineering Regiment in Embilipitiya near Hambantota and are attending to casualties. Mobile sections are working in different relief camps in the area in coordination with local, civil and military authorities.
- The Medical Team from INS Sarvekshak operated from Hotel Closenberg at Galle and treated over 175 patients on 08 Jan 05.
- The Mobile Medical Team from INS Jamuna visited Relief Camps at Sally, Sambaltheevu Vellur and Kovil near Trincomalee and treated 376 outpatients.
- Two Medical Officers and 06 Medical Assistants from INS Kirch continue to be deployed at Kinniya in Trincomalee district to run a medical camp.
- Six Medical Officers and 12 Medical Assistants from INS Aditya are deployed in Batticaloa area. On an average 500 patients are being treated daily.
Aircraft Detachment
- Dornier aircraft operating from Colombo ferried two Indian engineers from China bay to Batticaloa. In addition, 850 kgs of medical stores were unloaded at Batticaloa.
- Islander aircraft operating from Colombo ferried two UNDP officials to Koggala and back.
Trincomalee
IN Ships Jamuna, Ghorpad and Kirch are at Trincomalee. The disembarakation of approximately 120 Tons of relief supplies from INS Ghorpad is in progress. A relief camp comprising 05 officers, 22 senior sailors and 35 junior sailors, equipped with portable equipment and engineering support tools continues to provide relief assistance to the needy people in the area. The following reconstruction activities were undertaken in the last 24 hours:-
- Pumping out of sea water from 06 wells in Kuchuni area.
- Basic electrification for 23 houses.
- Debris clearance from 11 houses.
Another relief camp has been established at the deserted Govt Hospital, Kochuveli. The following tasks were undertaken to recommence work in the hospital:-
- Hospital Laboratory and dispensary has been set up with equipment and medicines supplied by ships.
- The power supply to the hospital has been provided by Jamuna’s three portable gensets. In addition, repairs of 10 KVA Harvest emergency generators are in progress.
- The centrifugal water pump has been repaired and made operational.
Relief Assistance to Maldives (Op CASTOR)
CGS Sagar and one Dornier aircraft continues to be deployed in Maldives to support relief operations at various islands.
Indonesia (Op GAMBHIR)
IN Ships Nirupak (Hospital Ship) with Chetak helecopter and Khukri (Corvette) are deployed off Meulaboh (Indonesia) since AM 05 Jan 05. The disembarkation of relief stores is in progress at anchorage into LCVP (Landing Craft -Vehicle & Personnel) of the Indonesian Navy.
Medical Relief One medical camp is being operated in the premises provided by the Indonesian Army and all the medical relief stores ex-Khukri have been disembarked to the camp ashore. Approximately, 200 patients were treated for infections and secondary/delayed suturing.
One patient with gangrene in his right foot below knee was airlifted to INS Nirupak (Hospital Ship) and successfully operated upon. Three senior Indonesian surgeons also visited the ship for review of the patient and to acquaint themselves of the medical facilities available onboard.
SUMMARY
The relief operations are focused towards assistance in rehabilitation process and provide medicare. The ships, aircraft and personnel of the Indian Navy are continuing efforts to augment the rehabilitation work initiated by the Central and State Governments. This is being done in terms of transporting relief material, evacuation of personnel to relief camps, running of medical camps, etc. The ships along with personnel deployed in Sri Lanka and Indonesia are undertaking various tasks to restore essential services and their deployment in the affected areas is being eagerly sought by the local people as well as the governments.
