MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS
A journey along the information highway
The
Management Information Systems department started its journey as
the erstwhile Electronic Data Processing (EDP) department, which
was setup in the year 1972 and was located in the main building.
Its primary function was keying in of refit related data on punch
cards. At the time, it was the first EDP center in the entire Indian
Navy and was amongst the first few in the country. The Department
was equipped with one Mainframe system ICL-1901 that used to be
operated in timeshared mode with certain other units of the Navy.
Subsequently the department was also supplied with IBM-2904, Uptron S-850, Uptron System S-1650
and ESPL SSM 32V etc which were the new breed of Super Micros at
that time.
With increasing IT infrastructure and ever-expanding role, there
was a need of bigger space and was rechristened as the Management
Information System Department in Aug 87.
Over the last three decades, the department has undergone a total
metamorphosis from a data processing agency to a department which
is responsible to provide all aspects of IT services, hardware and
software, to the whole yard. As a result, the IT inventory of the
yard has seen a multifold increase in the last few years. With the
setting up of the Fiber Optic based Campus Area Network in Aug 03,
implementation of IT has taken a quantum leap with accessibility
being provided at the lowest echelon.
A large number of application packages are being developed on progressive
basis through in-house efforts as well as well as by off loading
to trade to automate the core functioning of shop floors and departments.
Increasingly, users are adapting to work with web-based applications,
which have resulted in empowerment at the grass root level by application
of high technology.
The yard boasts of many online work flows such as Ship defect reporting
and monitoring system, Dispensary Management System, Workers online
information; attendance recording e.t.c.
Yard also has online communication between the connected nodes.
The yard is witnessing rapid proliferation of IT into almost every
area of its functioning.
